Tutukaka Coast Bird, Bat and Bittern Monitoring
About
As part of our Keep Tutukaka Beautiful program we carry out targeted 5 minute bird counts , bat and bittern surveys in Tutukaka. These results help us to understand how the populations birds, bats and bittern are changing over time, especially as we provide more protection and restore habitats - are the birds coming back, are bats and bittern thriving? Are they declining and we need to do more to protect them?
How you can help
Come and join us to learn how to identify 12 of our native birds and how we record them, how to identify the call of a bittern and the pattern of a bat on a buzz! We can also set up a route near you so you and your whanau of friends can contribute to this important work. Training is provided during February and March when we survey our 6 base sites on the Tutukaka Coast area. We need people who are reasonably fit (their are some climbs and steep inclines between sites) have good hearing and/or eyesight and/or can record birds using our app.
